Machine Control Issue
Hey Now,
I have a BETACAM SP (UVW1800) attached to my AJA i/o right now and it is digitizing in 8Bit Component just fine, but I am having machine control issues. Seems when I batch capture a list of clips, it rewinds the tape to the beginning checks the code then FF to the clip , DIG, rewind to the beginning, FF to the clip, DIG….etc.
It doesnt make much sense, I have checked all my prefs and I just cant seem to make it behave. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated

this is JUST A GUESS – so don’t kill me if I am wrong. You obviously have machine control, because it is attempting to cue the tape, and read the time code – except that it is getting lost.
this is my guess – you have a BAD TAPE. You are in the heat of your project, and you have to use this tape (or this batch of tapes from this camera) – and they are not working !. I urge you to grab another tape from an entirely different project, and try to capture from it and see what happens. Normally, when the AJA has issues, it give you NO VTR CONTROL – it says “no communications”, and you can’t control the deck. That usually winds up being a bad cable, corrupt preferences, AJA drivers that have to be reloaded, or rarely, a defective RS422 port on the I/O box. But you have control – it’s just getting lost during capture.
I bet you have bad tapes. TRY ANOTHER TAPE – from ANOTHER SHOW – not this show.bob Zelin

You should also verify if both the LTC and VITC timecode match and where which one the IO is using for reference when it is in shuttle mode versus pause.
If the tape is a pre-edited master it is quite possible VITC timecode was not regenerated when the editing was done which would cause a difference between the LTC and VITC timecodes to occur. When this happens the result will be confusion during the capture stage.
On some betacam vtr’s there is a switch labeled LTC, VITC and auto which allow you to select which timecode you will send out the 422 9 pin cable. Set it to LTC and see if it makes a difference.
