  • Thinking about an io…

Posted by Enzo Tedeschi on April 26, 2006 at 2:50 am

    Hey all,

I’m thinking of picking up an io box, and was curious about hard drive recommendations. From what I read on other posts, a two-drive SATA raid would be enough – but will I need a third-party controller to get the speed?

Any suggestions or ideas welcome, and I’m not shy about “rolling my own” if there is a significant advantage (in dollars or otherwise)…

Also, has anyone experienced any major headaches with this box working at 1:1? And does it allow for say 2:1 within the codecs etc? It’s unclear from the AJA website….

    Thanks in advance…

a great SATA starter kit is the Firmtek Seritek 2 port host card, 2 bay SATA enclosure, with 2 Seagate or Hitachi SATA drives. This is VERY inexpensive, and will easily to 8 and 10 bit SDI and DVCProHD. Yes, you must stripe the 2 SATA drives together using Apple Disk Utility. I use this configuration all the time with zero problems. You will make back the money on this configuration the first day of billing.

    Thanks, Bob.

I have done some pricing comparisons, and to build one as per your suggestion comes to within a couple of hundred dollars of something like this in the same size:

and this unit has the RAID built in. A wiser option? Built-in RAID surely must offer some advantage… plus I’m in Australia, and I can’t seem to fins a local supplier for the Firmtek stuff… yet…

Do you have an opinion of the Lacie unit? Or Lacie in general – the views her are mixed.

    Hello Enzo,
If you are considering a SATA solution from LaCie, you can check out the Two Big:
    https://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10490

    500GB or 1TB.

    Works great for 8bit/10bit SD.

    Hope this helps.
    Mat @ LaCie.

    Thanks, Mat.

That’s the one in my link above – can’t buy from the Lacie store, as it won’t ship to Oz.

Are they shipping yet? Everywhere online is listing them as pre-orders only.

    Hi Enzo,
We started to ship in the US a few weeks ago so I am fairly sure that LaCie Australia is also shipping Two Big. If not, it should be a matter of days.

Just in case, here is LaCie Australia contact info:
    https://www.lacie.com/au/contact/

    Thanks.
