  • AJA Io LA Audio 3 & 4 Out

Posted by Pat Defilippo on January 18, 2006 at 8:50 pm

I just bought an AJA Io LA and have it hooked up directly to my UVW-1800 Beta-SP deck. I don’t have an audio mixer since I only have the one deck and this appears to be working pretty well. The Beta-SP deck I have only has Channel 1 & 2 audio IO. So, Channel 3 & 4 IO from the AJA Io LA breakout cable are just hanging here.

Is it possible within a setting somewhere to send Channel 1 to Channel 3 and Channel 2 to Channel 4? This way, I can send Channel 1 and 2 out (via AJA cables 3 and 4) to a matchbox to convert it to RCA L & R out. Then, I can get a stereo RCA male (out of the matchbox) to a female mini and go to my computer speakers so that I can hear the audio in sync. Right now, I have to monitor the audio via my video monitor’s mono speaker in order to hear it in sync.

If this is not possible, is there another way that I can get sync audio to my computer speakers without having to add a mixer? If a mixer is the only route, what’s a good inexpensive one that will do the trick?

    Thanks in advance!

The Behringer UB802 will let you monitor all 4 channels for $49.95. The cables cost more than the mixer. The labor to install it cost more than the mixer. Your lunch and dinner today cost more than the mixer. Your internet connection to read this cost more than the mixer.

Thanks, Bob! The price is certainly right for the mixer.

If the AJA Io LA allowed for Channel 1 & 2 audio to be duplicated out of Channel 3 & 4, I’d have everything I need to feed both my UVW-1800 Beta-SP deck (via Channel 1 & 2) and my matchbox for audio to speakers or VHS, etc. (via Channel 3 & 4). That would even be cheaper than $49.95, eat up less power and take up even less space!

In checking out the Behringer UB802, I would additionally need to buy eight XLR to Phono cables in order to plug into and out of it from the AJA Io LA and the Beta-SP. On the UB802, it looks like Pots 1 & 2 could be for audio in from the AJA and Pots 3 & 4 could be for audio in from the Beta-SP. For audio out of the UB802, I could probably go with the “Main Out” to the Beta-SP and the “Control Room Out” to the AJA Io LA (or visa-versa).

I could possibly then lose the matchbox because there is one set of stereo RCA inputs and one set of outputs. It’s probably from this output that I can go to my computer speakers via a stereo male RCA to female mini “Y” adaptor, which would also share the output with my VHS deck, unless I can use the “Stereo Aux Return” left and right and somehow go from left and right phono to mini OR go back to my matchbox via two more XLR to Phono cables (and then to the VHS via RCA full time).

Unfortunately, this $100+ solution (by the time you buy the eight to ten XLR to Phono cables) still leaves the Channel 3 & 4 cables in and out of the AJA Io LA just hanging there useless in my case, which makes me need to buy a mixer instead of being useful. For me, the extra $100 expenditure is not as big a deal as the desired fewer cables and equipment (hense less things that can go wrong) in my edit suite. Ideally, I’d have a cleaner looking setup that optimizes as many AJA audio cables as possible.

That said, does the above mixer setup, regarding inputs and outputs, sound about right or am I missing something? Is there even a better way?

    Thanks again!

If you read down a few posts you’ll see that I was in your same situazione. I found a good monitoring solution using the 25 pin output of the AJA. The cable though was going to cost me

Every system I build has a mixer on it. I would never use a $49 mixer, but you have a tight budget. As your system grows, you will need more inputs. A larger mixer will cost you between $150 – $300, which in my opinion, is still pretty cheap. I usually put in Behringer UB2442FXPro mixers, which are
$299 at most music stores, and mail order companies, like B+H. The UB1622 is
only $179, has a lot more inputs, and is excellent also.

I would DEFINATELY use a mixer if I was you.

    Hi Bob and Kim!

Thanks again for your help with this! You sold me – I guess my best bet is an audio mixer and a bunch of cables.

My problem is that I don’t have a lot of physical room in the suite. I have two non-linear systems in one room (FCS via AJA Io LA and Accom StrataSphere) and a Beta-SP that would need to be mixed, plus a VHS via RCA. So, a 6 channel mixer would be ideal but an 8 would be good for future expansion, too (although I plan to phase out the Accom StrataSphere at some point soon, freeing up that IO of the mixer). Ideally, the mixer would have XLRs both in from the three stereo sources PLUS XLRs back out to the same sources. However, if I have to buy several XLR to Phono adapters, then I’ll have to do that.

The Behringer mixers look good (thanks again for the suggestion!), but they look huge, too. I’m familiar with Mackies somewhat as I used to use them and others like that back in the linear days. Is there anything smaller that you can suggest that would fit the bill for me! Is there an ideal mixer for FCP?

    Thanks again!

I have the Behringer UB 1204 which is 12″ deep by 9″ wide. Eight inputs, plenty of outputs. Cost me $150.00 in October of 2004. I never turn it off and it’s run flawlessly.

Hello again – this time thanks to Lee as well!

I’m just a bit confused regarding the outputs of the Behringer. I can see where I can run the XLRs in from the AJA Io LA, Beta-SP deck, etc., to the different inputs but where is it that I run the audio out of the mixer back to the AJA Io LA, Beta-SP deck, etc.? I only see one set of male XLR for either/or but I don’t see any more XLR outputs than that. Do you additionally have to get an XLR DA or are there additional Phono outputs that can be adapted?

Also, what type of speakers do you run for monitoring and what mixer output do you use for that?

    Thanks again for you help!

I run the Main Out XLR Back to my Io. I run the 1/4″ phone Control Room outputs to a powered speaker pair (Roland MA-8), but you could run it to any amp/speaker combo. For layback to my Betacam Deck I use the Alt Out 3-4 which I believe is balanced 1/4-inch TRS. I use the RCA phono tape out to feed VHS and DVD recorders.

You could put a DA on the XLR output, but that could cost from $200 to $300. I’ve found that some of the less expensive DA’s with high impedence inputs add distortion to the signal. The Laird LTM-ADA6 1×6 Balanced Audio Distribution Amplifier has 600-Ohm inputs, but is going to cost almost $300. Perhaps someone has a less expensive suggestion.
