Audio problem. Maybe a simple answer.
Posted by Jason on December 18, 2005 at 6:23 amI just bought a new G5 with FCP. I bought an AJA Io LA so that I can capture and export uncompressed SD via component BNC. I am able to capture and playback video, but no audio. When I switch Final Cut’s playback settings to default the audio plays back through my case, but I can’t get anything through my AJA box.
I currently have a DVCAM deck connected to the AJA In/Out via component BNC. The four channels of audio out of my deck are going into my AJA box and the four channels of audio out of the AJA are connected to my mixer, which is connected to my studio monitors. My AJA is connected to my computer with firewire connection.Am I missing something? I have a clip of video with audio loaded in my computer. When I play the clip in my timeline, the VU Meter in FCP is jumping, but I’m not getting anything out to my mixer.
I’m new to Final Cut/Mac, so I figure there’s probably a simple solution to my problem.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

December 18, 2005 at 3:50 pm1) I would like to ASSUME that when you plugged in your AJA I/O box, that you downloaded the correct drivers for the AJA I/O, and once you launched FCP, you went to the Easy Setups, and selected something like Betacam 8 bit uncompressed. Bring up color bars/tone in FCP, and play it so you have continuous tone coming out of the unit. Do you see any levels on your mixer anywhere ?
2) I would like to ASSUME that you are plugged into the LINE INPUTS of your audio mixer, and that you have your mixer assigned to 1-2 or L-R, and your master faders are up (and no solo buttons are pushed anywhere). Do you still see no levels ?
3) find some cheapo “computer speakers” and plug them into the stereo mini plug out on the back of the MAC G5. If you hear any audio while you play back the FCP sequence, you have your audio outputs assigned to the MAC G5, instead of the AJA Pro I/O (which you can easily change in the Audio/Video settings menu).
4) Download the AJA I/O control panel from http://www.aja.com. It will allow you to independently pass your Beta VTR thru the IO/LA box without using FCP and all of it’s wacky setup menus. Play around with the I/O control panel, and you will see the way to select ANALOG AUDIO – it will feed your mixer the same way – do you get any audio now ?

December 18, 2005 at 8:29 pmI bought the editor as a turn-key system from Promax. It supposedly has everything loaded and has already been tested by their techs. I’ve tested my mixer by plugging my deck straight into it and it is fine. I plugged a set of computer speakers into the mini jack on the back of the computer and got nothing. I have not tried downloading the control panel, but that is my next move.

December 18, 2005 at 8:47 pmIf you bought from ProMax they have 60 or 90 days tech support (I can’t remember which). If they integrated it and tested it then they should help you with your problem. They were prompt with assistance when I bought my system last year.

December 18, 2005 at 8:52 pmJason –
ProMax can test the system ALL DAY LONG – there are a million setup menu’s inside FCP for a million different type of VTR’s, and configurations. It is YOUR responsibility to know how to use the system. Every time you use a different type of VTR, it may require a different setup – that is what creating EASY SETUPS is about – so you don’t have to suffer thru the countless menu’s each time.I urge you to simply go to http://www.aja.com, click on support/IO, and download the AJA I/O control panel. You will be able to test out your system without having to go into FCP (and all of it’s settings). Poke around in the control panel – you will see how to change the audio from AES to analog, to embedded (you want analog audio).
If this fails, AJA will be happy to send you a replacement AJA IO/LA box, but I would bet money that it’s a simple setting in the software. IT TAKES TIME to learn ANY new software – whenever I sit down in front of a new product – IT NEVER WORKS – it takes time to learn where all the setup menu’s are – there is NO ONE that can just “set it up, so it just works” for you – there are too many variables. This applies to all products today, including consumer cameras (whatever happen to the day of “point and shoot” with no menus to go thru).
ps – you never did answer if you went into the Easy Setup menu and selected Betacam 8 bit uncompressed….

What do you have as playback settings in your audio/video settings pop up menu? Have you set audio to Pro Io?

December 18, 2005 at 9:00 pmWell, I’ve downloaded the control panel and the firmware update, but I can’t figure out how to use it. It says “No Video.” My deck is set to “remote” and I have a tape in it. What next?

December 18, 2005 at 9:04 pmMy last post went out before I read yours. I have everything I can find set to ProIO. In Audio/Video Settings I have my video set to Betacam 8 bit uncompressed.
I realize there’s going to be a huge learning curve, since I have not only switched to FCP, but I also switched from PC to Mac.

December 18, 2005 at 9:18 pmOkay so when you play a clip in the timeline you see the audio meters moving and your audio playback is set to Pro Io correct? Is this a clip you digitized from the deck via the AJA? What sort of mixer are you plugged into and are you going straight to the mixer with the XLR cables from the AJA? Is there by any chance a mic/line switch on each channel of the mixer? When you tested the deck straight to the mixer did you use the same channels as the AJA is plugged into with XLR cables?

December 18, 2005 at 9:23 pmOh BTW, you dont also have your DVCam deck connnected to a firewire port on the computer as well do you?

December 18, 2005 at 9:46 pmI’ve tried playback with 3 different clips. (Audio playback is set to ProIO.)
1. A clip that was captured by Promax (meters are jumping, but no sound to audio board)
2. A clip that I captured from my deck via AJA (the meters on my deck are jumping, but no audio was captured)
3. Bars and tone (meter in FCP shows audio playing, but nothing out to mixer)My mixer is a Mackie DFX-6. I’ve tested Channels 1&2 by bypassing the AJA and going straigt in from the deck. Playback to my speakers was fine then.
And no, I don’t have my deck’s firewire connected to anything. My AJA is connected to my computer via firewire.
The audio breakout cable provided with the AJA has four XLR ins and four XLR outs. Four are connected to the XLR outs on my deck and four are connected to the 1st four channels of my mixer.
