  • io SDI connection to DSR45 deck

I have been researching the setup of an AJA io box and have a couple of question that hopefully someone can help me with.

I downloaded the manual and there is a setup diagram that shows SDI connectors with embedded audio on the io can hook up to a DSR-45 deck. Now I have a DSR-45 deck and the only connections on it are component, svideo and firewire. What does the cable look like that would hook the deck up using SDI? Is there a converter needed?

Also, I’ve always used this deck with the firewire connection. Is the component connection preferable from a quality perspective to input DVcam video into FCP?

Thanks for any insight anyone can provide.

The DSR-45 does not have SDI, nor does it have an option for SDI. I am not sure what manual you downloaded, but if it is fact a Sony manual, then there is a typo in the manual you downloaded. You ain’t getting SDI from a DSR-45, no matter what you do.

Most people I know use the component analog signals from the DSR-45 to go in and out of the AJA I/O for FCP. Those that don’t own an AJA I/O are using Firewire.

Thanks for your response Bob. This didn’t make any sense to me either but it was in a layout diagram of an io manual I downloaded from AJA about a year ago. You’d think they would have known how their system sets up!

I meant to ask too, does the analog component connection work better than the digital firewire in terms of quality?

Some have said that the analog outputs add some smoothing to DV (the apple DV codec adds no 4:1:1 smoothing as does the AVID DV Codec). I usually go analog from my DSR-1500a to the DVCPro 50 codec or 8-bit uncompressed. The results are quite good. Looking critically on a Sony Broadcast monitor I have a hard time seeing the difference. I also have some projects that I capture via firewire and then use the IO to monitor analog video out. That looks quite good as well.

I have set up our patch panels to include DV patches for capturing dailies, therefore bypassing the AJA.
This way we can get digital audio that can be used in the final mix without having to load in from Dats separately.
When doing a conform from DV sources, i capture via component through the AJA.

    Hi there,
Sorry for been so outdated, I’m been using a AJA IO SD for some years. But because I’m not too satisfacied with the quality I get in the monitor via s-video (because I have the componet connectors bussy for the DSR 45) I tried to use the out componet connector to the monitor and I made a mess. I’m confused with the terms Sony and by AJA use to define the connector(Y, RY, BY by Sony) and YPbPr by AJA. I actually forgot who I did the first time and my equipment is in a small room. Which cable should I use for which connector, or what connector should get plug to each other?

Is you are so kind? I don’t have a black burst. It’s worth to connect the VTR to the REf on the AJA?

Many thanks for you time. I’m more a DP than a editor (two world apart!). If I can be of any help, I’ll be mor than glad to do so.

[jose pantin] “I’m confused with the terms Sony and by AJA use to define the connector(Y, RY, BY by Sony) and YPbPr by AJA. I”

    Sony=AJA: Y=Y/G, R-Y=Pr/R and B-Y=Pb/B

The Ref connector on the Io is an input not an output so it won’t provide a reference for your VTR. You don’t need it anyway for the DSR45.

    Best of luck.

    great post lee thanks.

and if the Io needs Ref, you can set the Control Panel to see the incoming video as Ref.

    Thanks Gary,

    Jose,
If your deck needs a reference (As does the UVW1800 Betacam) then you can use the Io’s composite output as a reference. You can invest a few hundred dollars in a black burst generator, but if our deck doesn’t require a reference I wouldn’t spend the money.

    Many thanks Lee,

For your pront reply. It was a great help. As I told you because I have all my componet connectors busy to and from my VTR, I monitor through the s-video connector from the AJA. Everything works well for capturing an printing to video. But when I’m going to monitor what I printed to video It doesn’t show on the monitor connected to de AJA via S-video, it does show on a normal TV set that is connected to the VTR via composite.

I have some time without using my system but I think it used to show on both. If you remember, I tried to change the componet cables to be able to see better on the pro monitor and I changed back to the original set up because that cause me lots of trouble.

The out light on the AJA is on but I can’t see nothing on the pro monitor and s-cable is ok because it work while editing.

I hope you can help me.

    All the best,

    Jose
