AJA Kona Lhi w/ Broadcast Monitor
I work for a relatively new company that puts out dvd instructional videos. I am trying to increase the quality of our videos for our consumers.
Currently, I use only one monitor, a 30″ HP LP3065 LCD hooked up to my Mac Pro, running Final Cut Studio. I want to connect a broadcast monitor to get a better idea of the final product.
I want to have a relatively simple solution. Having scoured the posts, I’ve come up with what I think will be a working solution, but I want to get feedback to make sure it’s going to work before i buy.
I would have to purchase – AJA KONA Lhi along with a Flanders Scientific LM 1760W.
My understanding is the KONA comes with the graphics card and the breakout box, and all needed cables to connect the two.
Would I then only need one HDSDI cable to connect the breakout box to the monitor?
Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Good Choice…and you’re almost spot on!
The Kona LHi does not come with a Break-Out Box (B.O.B.). This is an additional cost. It does, however, come with a Break-out Cable (sometimes known as a pigtail) which gives you most of the spigots an LHi BOB does.

The benefits of the BOB include having a rack mounted and thus easily accessible “patch” point, unbalanced (RCA) connections for audio monitors, HD SDI jacks instead of patching directly to the back of the card in the CPU, as well as a reference loop.
I believe it is several hundred dollars, but 9 times out of 10, the client buys the BOB.

A DVD is Standard Definition by the way.

I have a similar situation as I produce primarily DVD and Web based video. I needed to come up with a good reasonably priced reference monitor and a card for output to the reference monitor and have the ability to capture analog video/audio. I was told by some retailers to go with the Decklink HD extreme or studio 2 cards. Is it worth going with the LHi or LHe? The FS LM-1770W monitor seems to be a solid choice even though i’m not thrilled spending $2700, is it the best value?
