  • Kona LHe + G5 + HDCAM Deck = ProRes footage?

Posted by Greg Leuenberger on January 8, 2009 at 4:32 pm

Hi, I typically work with footage from a P2 camera but a client of mine wants to bring in an HDCAM deck to capture some 1080 59.94 footage. The system I want to use is a Quad G5 2.5 GHz with a Kona LHe and a 4 Drive Raid capable of 200 MB/Sec. AJA’s site seems to indicate that a Quad G5 is capable of capturing proRES at HD res….not sure if it’s proResHQ though…I’m curious if anybody has actually done this though before I commit to it.

If worst comes to worst I can put the LHe in an 8 core 3.0 GHz Mac Pro…I would just rather not hassel with it. Also, can I just set the HDCAM deck to internal sync? I would be willing to buy a Gen10 but it seems like I should get away without having to provide sync if I’m just capturing from a deck directly hooked up to the Kona (at least my Pana DV50 deck is fine with no sync).

    thanks in advance,

    Greg

    nope….
You will not be able to capture HD as ProRes on a G5 computer.

the G5 machines do not have enough power to capture HD footage as ProRes HQ.

Thanks Gary, I guess I’ll be hooking up the 8 Core then…

The fact that your source is 1080 at 30 frame/sec puts it just over the line for what a Quad G5 can capture in ProRes. A Quad G5 will capture ProRes at 1080 at 24 fps.

An alternative, if the amount you have to capture is not too much, would be to capture in Uncompressed 10-bit and transcode the files to ProRes. Your machine can handle that because the computation for compressing to ProRes can proceed in less than real time.

Yeah, I would normally go that route except my RAID is going to be a hair under what’s capable for uncompressed 1080…so I think I’ll just switch the Kona over to the 8-Core (or stripe across 2 raids…that would probably give me enough bandwidth for 1080 uncompressed)
