  Digitizing HDV 1080i with Kona 2 dropped frames

  I am running a dual 2.7 G5 with 3 gigs of RAM on FCP. Trying to Digitize HDV footage at pro res , 10 bit or 8 bit, 1080i and I keep getting dropped frames. Any ideas? I am digitizing to my local internal drive, not yet to a SAN.

  Do I need more RAM? What else could it be?

  Thanks in advance for any solutions.

  Oh and I am digitizing over HD-SDI with a K box and Kona 2

  ProRes requires an intel Mac or quad g5 for HD captures:

  Also, you will probably need a faster drive.

  but I don’t want to buy another computer.
  And I dont’ want to buy another drive.
  Why can’t I just use the internal drive of my old MAC ?
  Why do I have to keep spending money all the time.

  Thanks Jeremy- didnt know that.

  I called up AJA and their support team walked me through the data rate calculator to find out how much speed I need to write HDV at 10bit to my drives- then walked me through the system test and found out that I dont have enough speed to digitize at 10 bit. The recommendation was to digitize using DVCPROHD codec, which now works perfectly. Thanks!

  Adam –
  you MUST stop using your internal hard drive for recording your media. Why – because I said so. I don’t care if you buy the cheapest Firewire 800 drive on the planet on ebay – you have to STOP recording media on your internal hard drive. This is the law. Don’t ask questions – this is the way it is, and we (the Creative Cow police) will arrest you if you continue to record video media on your internal hard drive. Tomorrow, buy an external hard drive (or put another drive inside your MAC G5).

  Thanks Bob- I am now digitizing to my 14 terabyte xsan over fibre. I was just digitizing to my internal to test the format and see if the speed coming into the machine would work. Appreciate the wisdom. Anything without RAID is dangerous business. Ill watch out for those police
