  • Kona 2 can’t share 100mHz PCI-X bus?

Posted by Arnie Schlissel on March 27, 2008 at 5:06 pm

    Quick summary-
I had my Kona 2 in slot 2 of my G5, and added a Siig FW800 card to slot 3 (both are 100mHz slots). Although the Siig works fine there, the K2 stopped working.

I remove the Siig, & the K2 works fine.

I move the Siig to slot 4 (133mHz) and keep the K2 in slot 2 & both work fine.

I move the K2 to slot 4 & the Siig to slot 2, & both work fine.

I stopped there, because I’d lost patience & both are working, and it still leaves a slot empty in case I add a SATA card.

So, does this mean that the Kona 2 will not share the 100mHz bus? Should I care, now that I’ve got everything working?

    For the record:
    G5 dual 2.5, 7GB of RAM, FCP 6.0.2, Mac OS 10.5.2, QT 7.4.1

Nope. Limitation of the bus, not the card. It runs @ 100, but it doesn’t share 100 very well.

Jeremy is correct. You CANNOT stick your SIIG FW800 card into this system, as it will slow down the buss for either the Kona or SATA (or SCSI, or Fibre) card. No Firewire for you !

Oh, well. For now, I need the FW. When my needs change, I’ll yank it.

As long as you have them separated in slot 3 and slot 4, you are fine. Do you have another storage card in there usually?

Not right now. I’ve got slot 3 open.

    That’s fine, slot (2or3) and slot 4.

    You are fine.
