stress relief
Posted by Carter Donaghy on October 12, 2005 at 10:54 amso what do you guys do when you get computer burn? I usually hit the electric guitar in Hendrix mode followed by a 2 mile run. Pinot Noir helps a bit.

October 12, 2005 at 2:58 pmVideo games help me…Along with going for a ride and picking up a chocolate shake. I also found that when I dont make it to the gym during the week that I feel a bit sluggish on the creative side. I have to get rid of some stress by playing softball or basketball or something…

October 12, 2005 at 5:25 pmIt takes a few tries to find someone who can give a decent back and neck massage, but a good one is worth every penny. An hour and a half is best. Also, rather than take long vacations, we go away for a couple of days once a month. We have a favorite lodge in the mountains and in winter, go to Montauk beach and zone out at a resort with a room on the dunes. They have a really cool, waterfall hot tub.
Yeah, a few slugs from the bottle at times. -

October 12, 2005 at 11:13 pmTiVo has changed the way I spend my tv time. I try to minimize time spent watching tv, but knowing that the exact shows I want to chill out to are available when I want to watch them is great. This old house classics is a fave – no relation whatsoever to what I may be working on, plus you can always use a brush up on your drywalling technique.
The mountain bike helps too – I always comment to my wife that I did not think about work once during the whole ride.
Ski season will be here soon, and there is a small slope in the same town as my office – might have to try that out this year.Mike

October 13, 2005 at 10:59 amWalking is soothing. Swimming is best exercise for tired twitchy muscles.
Actually, after being on a computer, I even enjoy mundane chores like doing the wash and rinsing dishes. -

October 14, 2005 at 2:46 pmHiking boots, tent, sleeping bag, warm fire and cold beer. As often as possible.
Fresh air and God’s Ozark Mountains work wonders.

October 15, 2005 at 3:48 amGet yourself a good dog and bring him/her to the office.
My buddie Jake, an English Shepherd, spent his days lying on his comfy pillow near my workstation. Whenever I’d get stressed out over a current project, one look at his goofy face and mohawk always helped me out. Like us, dogs pee and poop all the time. But, they need to be taken outside for the deed (like only some of us) and that creates the neccessary breaks in the day we otherwise may not take…leading to further burnout. Ugh, and neck stress. Also his farts could clear the room.
Plus, no matter how burntout/stressed/frustrated I became, Jake never seemed to be bothered. Ah, the joy of perspective.
Alas, I speak of dear Jake in the past tense. Had to put him down the end of August. His 19 (!) year-old body just couldn’t keep up with his spirit. Against my better judgement I have been spending way too much time in front of the computer.
But I did happen to schedule a massage for Monday afternoon.
