Best Raid for Kona?
My Ciprico/Huge Raid is dying and we don’t feel like paying for a repair again.
Does anyone have suggestions for a small 1TB or so for a Kona2…sd and hd?
Obviously we don’t want to spend thru the roof, but also we don’t want to spend more on repairs than we did on its purchase…again.
Any input is appreciated…even the ones to stay away from.

There are some great external SATA cards that can do RAID 5.

With our Kona 3 card we have been using 500G and 1TB G-Raids, as well as the CalDigit S2VR HD 3.7 TB – all with great success.

We’ve got 2 of the 1.5TB G-Speeds. Great little raids – rock solid with uncompressed HD. Raid 3 right out of the box which is ideal for video. You can get it in either SCSI or 4GB Fibre.

there are countless answers to this question, depending on how much money you want to spend, how much storage you want, and what resolution are you working at. On this very page of this forum are lots of banner ads, showing companies that make WONDERFUL RAID arrays that work great with Kona. And your company Ciprico also makes teriffic products as well. All the suggestions you have gotten here so far are excellent suggestions. You have to say HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU WANT TO SPEND. In today’s world with ProRes, a simple SATA drive in your MAC will work too. You have to say what type of work you are doing, and what your budget is.

Yes, you’re right. And Ciprico is a strong company, the huge raid is just old now and on its way out, it was rock solid until fairly recently.
The work is not heavy editing but I do have to ingest/output 720p 59.94 thru the Kona2 a few times a week.
We are aiming for $1k to $3k, and right now are leaning towards a Sans Digitial MobileRAID Series MR5S1 – 5-Bay RAID 6 Enclosure. (3.75TB and $3k)
Wondering if anybody has experience with Sans Digital.

So it looks like we need a good 300MBytes/sec for HD (according to the AJA Data Rate Calculator). That Sans Digital states 100Mbps, so we are still looking…

…and I guess its closer to 230MB/s covers most HD.

good choice. All their RAIDs are guaranteed to handle 1080i/29.97 4:2:2. I get about 210 MB/s typically. So that covers most HD data rates unless you’re getting into 4:4:4 or 2K. And the price is defiantly right.
Did you get fibre? One small gripe I had was they only give you 1 LC-SFP transciever… so I had to buy another one from Macmall in order to use the fibre optic cables.
