  • Running into Kona 3 problems that require hard reset

Posted by Paul Escandon on October 26, 2007 at 7:07 pm

We’ve just upgraded to 8-core Mac Pros with Kona 3 cards and I’m running into a problem every so often where the Kona 3 will not output video properly and the only way to fix the problem is to shut down (not reset) and manually turn the computer back on. When the Kona 3 is exhibiting this problem the output on the screen is generally garbled.. but never the same way or the same color. Also, trying to use Final Cut almost always results in a crash…

As of now this is just a hassle – but I’m hoping it is not a sign of a bigger problem to come or some hardware or software incorrectly configured.

The question that I have is does any one know of a way to potentially “Reset” the Kona settings or have it re-load into the system without having to do a hard reset? I can’t seem to figure that out if there is such a way…

    Thanks.

Have you run the PCIe Config Utility?

My Kona drivers are 3.4, my OS is 10.4.10, and I’m running Final Cut 5.1.4.

No, can you please tell me what/where this utility is?

    HardDrive > System > Library > CoreServices > Expansion Slot Utility.app.

    Select option#2 and restart.

My Kona drivers are 3.4, my OS is 10.4.10, and I’m running Final Cut 5.1.4.

the 3.4 drivers are not recommended for 10.4.10 and QT 7.2 but the upgrade wants an intel processor.

Oh yes I did just try this after reading it on the AJA site. I’ll see if I still notice the problem since this change.

    The AJA site says:

AJA Driver Compatibility as of KONA Version 4.0 is as follows:
FCP 6.0.x (Final Cut Studio 2)- Kona Driver version 4.0
    FCP 5.1.x – Kona Driver versions 3.1 through 3.4
FCP 5.0.x – Kona Driver version 3 (first Universal Binary version)

So I can’t really upgrade to 4.0 since I’m still running 5.1.4 based on this… oh and I am using QT 7.2 also.
