    Hi Gary,

We talked briefly after the JVC seminar in Dallas. Thanks for such a great presentation–I’m sure everyone learned quite a bit. I know I did.

Listen could ask you something? You see I have a limited budget (10-15K) to put together an HD production studio. I already own a G5 powermac (dual 2.5 GHz PowerPC with 3 GB DDR SDRAM) with FCP HD loaded, and I’m planning to purchase the JVC GY-HD110, the DR-HD100, an AJA Kona 3, and a couple of G-raid drives.

Given my budget, is there anything else you would suggest I add to the shopping list? I’m also interested to know if you think a computer upgrade may be necessary (I read somewhere that G5s like mine are having trouble processing HD–is this true?)

    Best,
    Arturo

1st, you may want to raise your budget.

You’re talking about getting a Kona card for a Mac that’s already 2 or 3 years old, and is based on PCI-X architecture. Any cards you put into this Mac will not be compatable with your next Mac. You should probably upgrade to a Mac Pro, which is based on PCI-e architecture. Don’t forget to put about 4GB (or more) of memory in the new Mac.

You don’t mention an HD monitor. That’s going to run you another $3k-$5k.

And I’d go with a big (as big as you can afford) SATA array rather than any firewire based drives.

That should read $2k-$4k for a monitor. I forgot about the Panasonic plasmas, which are a very good value if you don’t need to do color correction.

Arnie, the Pany plasmas are way less than that. The 42″ pro model can be had for only $913 at https://www.visualapex.com/plasma/plasma_details.asp?VA=Panasonic&chPartNumber=TH-42PH10UK
