Activity Forums AJA Video Systems SATA II RAID/HD question

  • SATA II RAID/HD question

Posted by Tpix on September 1, 2007 at 1:36 am

I might have to set up an HD suite again, sold the last one off 2 years ago.

Can a SATA II Raid do 1080i 59.94 10-bit HD uncompressed at this time? Last time I could only get 8-bit HD playback which was two years ago on a dual 2.7 G5, PCI-X.

I have a Quad 2.5Ghz G5 pci-e and was planning on using Kona hardware again.

Thanks in advance for any help

you could have done it back then (2 years ago) with 8 – 10 drives. The rules have not changed. Because you have the old MAC G5 dual 2.7, this is PCI-X. ATTO and Cal Digit do not make RAID 5 cards for PCI-X, so you can either get the Dulce 8 bay RAID 5 SATA array with the PCI-X card, or you can get a RAID 0 solution from Cal Digit – the S2VR with the FASTA-4X SATA host card. You can use anyone elses RAID 0 Sata solution, if you have 8 – 10 SATA drives, all striped RAID 0. Any of the new RAID 5 solutions will work, but all but the Dulce are PCI-E, and you have PCI-X.

You will also now need the AJA Kona 3X card – the Kona 2 is no longer made. And why do you need 10 bit uncompressed HD?
ProRes422HQ is not good enough for you ?

    Hi Bob,

    Thanks for your response…

I have no problem with the new apple Prores HD codec solution, and hopefully it will gain general acceptance quickly, because I love my old io…and the new io looks sweet…

but my clients want to hear the word uncompressed…and I always color correct in 10-bit.

I like to build my own systems because I am a cheap b*stard, so…

Here’s what I was thinking of doing:

-Two five bay Kano SATA port multiplier chassis, with WD 750 Gig Raid Edition drives, for ten drives in total striped as a single raid0 volume.

-I have two of the Sonnet 4 channel pci-e sata cards, so the the raid could be across two slots if necessary. I already have these cards so hopefully they are adequate and I won’t have to purchase something else.

-I would use one of the two available choices for an AJA HD card…haven’t decided yet.

My current machine that I want to use is actually a…

    G5 Quad 2.5, {PCI E), 8 Gigs RAM, Internal 1.5Tb SATA RAID 0 system disk.

what do you think? Good enough for 1080i 10 bit?

There’s a thread right above discussing Fibre vs. SATA for uncompressed with a lot of information regarding SATA for HD

I would never build my own arrays as there are too many good companies out there doing that for us and I like the idea of calling them for tech support if something goes wrong. We’re now running two SAS/SATA arrays from MaxxDigital which are running well over 450MB/s, more than enough for 10bit HD.
