Not to be pedantic, but SAS is an acronym for Serial Attached SCSI, not Serial Attached Storage.
Some tidbits:
Some SATA RAIDs use SAS connectors, but they don’t have SAS drives in them.
SAS host adapters can use both SAS and SATA drives, but SATA host adapters can only use SATA drives.
SAS controllers and drives are best suited for server use because the faster drive seek time (due to the availability of 15k rpm drives) and ability to handle multiple simultaneous requests benefits the large number of small IO transactions that servers typically encounter. Video storage doesn’t really benefit from these SAS-specific properties, so SATA drives offer a better price/performance ratio for video RAID applications.
