OT: professional opinions on quality of this HD transfer
conforming a indie film at 1080. there was no $$, so they got favors done for the 1080 with 2 different people *unsupervised*. Shot on Super-16 with kodak 500t stock.
Facility B’s stuff looks great. Well over 75% of facility A’s stuff looks terrible to me. It strikes me as a SD signal fed in the D5 and it upconverted to 1080… if I blow up my SD reference (digibeta dailies, they all look in good focus on my BVM) it looks nearly identical to the “1080”. Also in Facility B’s stuff, notice this vertical banding in the reds.
I’d REALLY APPRECIATE some opinions before I rustle any feathers. My HD experience is limited to commercial work shot on super35 with the HD done at a high end facility. Maybe all these “bad” shots are just out of focus… maybe it’s the super 16.
[these are full 1080 jpgs, about 1.5MB, with my digi ref picture in the corner)

….this looks great. all their stuff looks good

….the first thing you notice is the gate on the sides. that’s a problem because now we have to zoom in to get clean edges. this shot looks terrible. it was shot on the same night, same place, similar lighting.

….same night… but this looks pretty decent HD. She looks great.

….same night… looks so bad. could this really be so out of focus?
