I’ve finished editing some HD P2 footage in FCP. (720-24Pn) The material was color corrected using a Sony Luma monitor attached to my KonaLH card. When I downconvert the footage using Compressor to create an SD DVD, the image becomes very crushed and the colors become overly saturated. This is nothing even close to the output of the Kona Card. Changing the gamma settings in Compressor help, but I’d like to know what’s causing the shift in image quality during the software-based downconvert. I’m obviously not talking about resolution, but rather, the tonality of the image. Does anyone have a fix or know what is causing this? Thanks in advance.

Why did you use a Luma LCD monitor instead of a CRT? The luma monitors are not considered color grading monitors.

Have you reviewed the footage on a CRT?

The problem here, Tony, is the equipment dealers. Everybody, including Sony, is pushing the Somy Luma LCD monitors. Its only when you push an engineer at Sony will you find out that these monitors are not for color correction. Even, ProMax is selling this monitor on pre-configured systems.

I don’t get it at all… The only LCD that is color gradeable is the Panasonic LCDs and they still say theirs isn’t perfect. The only CRTs left that you can buy are expensive and have to be used if you want to purchase one. Something about government regulations and CRTs.

    wayne,

I would not even consider the panasonic color grading quality.

Ecinema or other ultra high end LCD are the only real color grading quality LCD monitors out there.

Having tested both the eCinema and the Vutrix/FrontNiche LCD’s I can atest that they are still not a patch on a BVM. Viewing angle is still the biggest problem blighting LCD “Grading” monitors. My advice is the JVC DT-V1710CGEB or DT-V1910CGEB if you can still get them state side, low cost, 800line, HD ready and the colours are great.
