  Compression Question

  Hello, I just made the leap from AVID to FCP. I am used to having different compressions
  like 1:1, 2:1, 10:1 and so on. How do the FCP guys do it?
  Do you all use 8bit, 10bit, DV50 as compression schemes depending on
  how clean the final has to be and how much space you want to use?
  I hope I dont sound just like some other crazy AVID guy,
  and I hope I asked the question right.

  I use the following

  10 Bit uncompressed 27MB/sec
  8 Bit uncompressed 21MB/sec
  DVCPRO 50 7mb/sec
  DV 3.8mb/sec

  These are the most efficient codecs for use with FInal Cut Pro. They are also optimized for use with the FCP RT engine.

  You can Use offline RT if you have Many hours of material, but even on large docs I just use DV and firewire drives because it looks good and storage is so cheap.

  Offline RT is pretty cool though. 1/8th the size of DV… it’s a photo JPEG compression that is pretty much akin to Avid’s AVR 4 or there bouts…

  I like it because it will work just swell on an internal Powerbook drive and make the whole shebang VERY portable.
