I did a search, but could not find the help I need. I installed my first Kona 2 card in my dual G5 with OSX 10.4.x and FCP 5.0. I am trying to get the card to work in a standard definition environment (DV) that I am familiar with, before attempting HD. At this time, I have setup the Kona 2 to output SD composite to a JVC NTSC production monitor. I have configured the Kona control panel for 525i29.97 frame buffer and 525i29.97 analog out NTSC composite. I have a simple DV NTSC (720 x 480) project in FCP and have selected the AJA Kona 525i29.97 10 bit (720 x 486) as the output in Audio/Video Settings menu. There is no 720 x 480 option. The image on the monitor is awful. There is ghosting and a lot of noise and distortion. When I output my project to the monitor via firewire through my deck, the picture is perfect. When I set the “Default Kona Output” to Black in the Kona Control Panel, the output is not a black screen, but green, color bars just a grainy resemblence of color bars. I setup a new project in FCP at 720p60, changed Kona frame buffer to same and downconverted SD composite output. Added colorbars generated by FCP to timeline. The output from that project was no better Can someone tell me what I have done wrong. Thanks, Jim

Are you running the latest drivers off the AJA website or did you install the drives that came on the CD? You must install the latest drivers from the AJA website to run the Kona 2 correctly with the latest version of OS 10 and FCP 5.

REPLY – Jim – I do not know what monitor you are using, but the Kona 2 can output Serial Digital, and HD-SDI. It cannot output a composite video signal. When you say SD composite, I get the impression you are expecting it to output Standard Def composite to your NTSC monitor composite input. The Kona 2 can only output SERIAL DIGITAL, which requires a SDI monitor (or a converter to go from SDI to SD composite – AJA makes one by the way). If you have the AJA K-Box for the Kona 2 (I don’t know if you have it), you can reconfigure the control panel analog output to change from analog component out to Composite out of the Y channel.

Please let me know if this is, or is not the case.

ALSO until you get this resolved, forget FCP for now. Just use the Kona Control panel to output – there is a test signal in there to generate color bars, until you are convinced that you are getting a real signal to your monitor.

Bob is correct from what you describe the problem is that your monitor is expecting a NTSC composite signal and you are feeding it Serial Digital.

You image should look like snow sort of grainy like you described.

The solution get a SDI to composite analog converter.

This is a common oversight since those damn bnc’s all look alike but if you take a close look at the Kbox it is labeled in small type SDI which can be switched between HD SDI And SD SDI.

Actually, yes it can. It’s one of the component output spigots, I believe the Y. If you look at the connections, it actually lists Comp there.

You disconnect all three of the component cables and just connect the one Composite cable. Then select Composite + Y/C in the Kona Control Panel.

Then make sure you’re not feeding an SDI signal to the monitor. It has to be the Composite signal from I believe the Y connector of the component output connections.

Well, I will be the first to admit, I do not know what I am doing with the Kona 2 and appreciate the help. As I read the documentation the 9-pin D connector cables (the upper connection on the card) outputs analog composite, component, or RGB video. I followed the suggestion and only have attempted to get decent color bars from the Kona Control Panel. There are three analog cables, typically arranged Red-Green-and Blue for component video. The Red is labeled Pr/R/C. The Green is labeled Y/G/CVBC. The Blue is labeled Pb/B/Y. I have tried connecting each. The Green gives me color bars in color, but very distorted with a lot of noise. The Blue gives me a black and white version of the same, and the Green gives me nothing (well a red=blue-green scrolling candy cane.) Once again, I appreciate the help! Jim

    Hi-

The KONA 2 and KBOX can output analog signals, including composite, as Walter states. On KBOX, there are three BNC’s under the “Video Monitor Out” section. The first is labeled “Y/G/CVBS”, which is the one that can be configured as composite. If you are not using KBOX, on the supplied analog breakout cables use the Green, labeled “Y/G/CVBS”.

Open the KONA Control Panel (located in “KONA” folder in your “Applications” folder). Click the “Analog Out” tab. Under the “Analog Format” pulldown, select “Composite + YC”. Also, in the “Formats” tab, please verify that your primary video format is set correctly to match the settings of the video you are trying to output (or if you are downconverting, ensure that your secondary format is set correctly).

If you are still having trouble, please feel free to contact AJA support (we are closed Monday due to a national holiday). Support can be reached by calling our main number, or emailing support@aja.com.

Yep the Green is the Composite output. I didn’t realize you weren’t using the K-Box. You should get a very clean composite feed out of that feed, I use it all the time to feed directly to my DVD Recorder for client approvals.

I’m wondering if your reference is set up correctly. Might be time to call AJA Tech Support and let them make sure you’re all set up correctly for your system. Great guys and they’ll walk you through everything on the phone.
