Any kind of upgrade path from Kona SD to the newer PCI Express versions of cards?
Just curious if there is any kind of upgrade path or do I need to buy a new card from scratch to get into the new G5’s with PCI EXpress…really want to buy a Quad Mac but not ready to start buying all new hardware just yet if I dont have to…

The new Kona LHe is the only AJA card to work with the newer machines. You could contact AJA Sales directly to see if there is any sort of an upgrade allowance available.

Keep in mind that there are no PCI X or PCI slots in teh new quad. What does that mean? Well. None of your old PCI cards will go into the new machine, so this means that your atto or SATA card or Firewire card, or USB card is only good on your older G5’s (wait did I just say older G5’s).
Anyhow. Taking the plunge into dual core will mean all new Hardware from teh ground up. NOt even one measy PCI slot in these new babies.

None Paul – prepare for financial agony. Becuase once you purchase your wonderful QUAD MAC G5, it will become outdated, just as all the PCIe cards come out, with the new Intel based MAC’s that everyone knows are coming. So your AJA, SCSI, SATA, Firewire and everything else that you are about to buy will become outdated again.
Perhaps someone can mix up a big bunch of Kool Aid for the entire editing community. Once we are gone, Steve Jobs will convince everyone that Firewire DV25 really is good enough quality, and that “they” never need to buy another card ever again. Then Mr. Jobs can go back to his original plan that he had back in the original Macintosh design – NO SLOTS, no third party hardware vendors, no professional partners. I am waiting for the big battle with Adobe to commmence sooner than later.

I hear you. Like Apeture isn’t a huge kick inthe head to Adobe and photoshop. That is a direct move into the Pro Photographer market with many, many powerful tools. They did the same with DVD SP too. And What choice does Adobe have but to keep making their software.

Maybe I’m a bit ignorant, but do I understand it rightly that I can’t use my Kona 2 in this new Quad machine nor any other card???

I talked about that to a photographer I know and he said that Aperture is aimed squarely at pro photographers and it not a graphics powerhouse like Photoshop. It may go that direction one day, but you would not replace Photoshop with Aperture.
It is interesting to keep in mind that Steve Jobs had Adobe at the June announcement of the Intel machines and they showed off Photoshop running on that machine as a sign of Adobe support of the new format.

Apple is still selling the Dual 2.7Ghz with PCI-X.

I wouldn’t chuck your PCI-X cards away just yet. If any of you follow the Mac Rumor sites we can expect new industrial Macintels sooner rather than later next year. Intel let slip that Apple want to be on the starting grid with new Pro 64 bit dual core machines bith laptop and desktop.
I am hoping, that the Motherboard design will be left to Intel so hopefully we will see at least 1 PCI-X slot return. In fact with all this stink Apple have rasied on the Quad not having PCI-X I’m sure we will be thrown a bone. Actually, the lack of PCI-X was because of issues with it coexisting with PCI-E on the Apple board along with the four processesors. This has some gravity especially as the Quad PCI-E only will have lost substantial sales on this aspect alone.
