  • DVCPro HD NDF timelines. Apple or Panasonic limitation?

Posted by Walter Biscardi on October 19, 2005 at 1:43 pm

Ok, I posed this over in the Varicam forum and nobody wants to touch it so I thought I would try over here.

My AJ-1200A VTR can record and playback Drop Frame Timecode. But Final Cut Pro will only create Non-Drop Frame timelines using the DVCPro HD 720 presets (Actually using ANY 720p preset). So my question is where is that limitation coming from? Apple or Panasonic?

Obviously Drop Frame is very important when cutting broadcast shows so I’m curious where this limitation on NDF only is coming from.

If you are only talking about presets in Final Cut – unless your Panasonic deck came with presets for FCP, then the presets are coming from Final Cut. When I looked at the presets that I have for HD DVCPro 720, it does only show 30 and 60 frames but I could go under the settings for the sequence (before adding any footage) and change the timeline to be drop frame.
Interestingly, the presets that Kona2 gives are for 23.98 and 59.94 and, in the sequence setting, the box to change it to drop or non is greyed out.

It is my understanding that there is not such thing as drop frame in 24p. I don’t know how this reflects on the other DVCPROHD formats however. I have been searching for a way to get “actual time” on a 720p sequence for broadcast. It is much harder to find this information than I though. I did, however, find an article that was rather interesting, but a bit old.

Anyway if you find a way to get DF please let me know.

That only works with the 30 frame preset, not with 24 or 60.

Exactly, they’re both non-drop frame rates. Actually if you look at the Apple DVCPro HD 60 preset, it’s 59.94 as well.
