Kona2 and KonaLH differences?
Kona just announced the Kona LH. After reading the specs I’m trying to figure out what the differences between the two cards really are. The literature on the website says ‘The Kona LH has some of the features of the Kona2 and AJA Io’. Can anyone out there enlighten me?

Basic differences are No Up-Convert or Dual Link HD on the LH.

Don’t forget the analog SD and HD INPUTS on the LH and not on the Kona2. These are also significant changes.

be happy. You already own the Kona 2 and the AJA I/O. You have everything. When you need to bring your second I/O room HD, you will still purchase a Kona 2 – just like you have – to be complete.If you were starting from scratch, the combo of the I/O and Kona 2 is still unbeatable. Kona LH is a more “entry level” system that does everything. AJA is playing “keeping up with the Blackmagic’s” on the low end. (not that the LH is a low end card !).

I think the price difference is only $400. Right?
Also, please correct me if I’m wrong, but to edit dual-link HD you would need two fully populated xraids (each side striped RAID5 and then all 4 of them striped RAID0 together) and two fiber-channel cards (thus splitting the signal over 4 fiberchannel cables). And the only tape formats that support dual-link HD are HDCAM SR and D6 Voodoo.
You can still always do a software upconvert in the FCP timeline or with Compressor.

I wouldn’t go XRAID at all, waste of money. Go with Medea and it’s a lot less money to get the throughput necessary for 4:4:4 Dual Link. We’re about to set up a Dual Link system for a film transfer facility here in Atlanta. I’ll try to remember to let you know how we set up the RAID for it.

Actually at 1080p24 can be done on a single fibre array the data rate peaks at about 200mgs a second.
Huge offers the 4210 array that does 4g fibre and can capture / playback at 320mgs a second.the buggy celerity driver however is needed to get 4g.
