  • KONA 2 – 1080i/50 yes or no?

Posted by Mladen Erjavec on August 19, 2005 at 10:18 am

    Hi

I have a simple question: does KONA 2 support HD 1080i/50? I can’t see this format on the list that is downloadable from their website, and their support person ambiguously avoids direct andswer to this question via email.

I have KONA 2 on order and now I am very scared. My delivery standard is 1080i/50, my material is shot the same way.

Can anybody on this forum answer this straight question: 1080i/50 yes or no??

    Thanks

The list of available capture presets and video playback on my Kona 2 system does not show 1080i 50…
however it does show 1080i 25 if that helps.

1080/50 is the PAL – HDV native format for FCP –the Kona 2 supports all NTSC and PAL frame rates- This HDV PAL content can be captured in HDV native over Firewire and then played back to any type of display, in realtime, using your Kona2 Card.

Thanks garry. But in this case I’d be editing HDV and I’m not quite so happy to do that. AJA support guy recommended to capture DVCproHD instead using analog-to-HD SDI converter and work in that space. I also thing this is better solution, especially for graphics, colour correction etc. But AJA support guy stopped responding his email when I asked can I do 1080i/50…. funny and everyone here is raving about their support…

    I think you just misunderstand.
you are shooting HDV 1080i50 correct?
PAL is a 25 frame video stream correct?

1080i50 is the same thing –just giving you the field numbering instead of frame numbering.
It is the same as 1080i60 is really only 29.97 fps.

I have done this a number of times -you set the capture to the easy setup called Kona 2 1080i 25 DVCPROHD and you get the HDV content in a decompressed state.

Thank you very much Gary – this is the answer that I was looking for. It is funny, though, that Blackmagic does list 1080i/50 on their products, and KONA 2 doesn’t… For people like me who’re only moving to HD now and are still bit confused this would be a deal-breaker…

1080i/50 is the standard of choice in Europe (I know of at least 2 cable channels) and also here in Qatar for the new Aljazeera International – so it’s not only HDV, is it?

Simple answer: Yes, KONA 2 supports 1080i50 mode.

As Gary points out, KONA 2 lists its modes by their FRAME rates, so in this case your “1080i50” (50 Fields/second) would use the settings labeled “1080i25” (25 Frames/second).

On the whole progressive and partially segmented frame formats are referred to by their frames and interlaced formats are referred to by the number of fields involved.

    Hence
    1080p/23.976
    1080p/24 —————— 1080i/48
    1080p/25 —————— 1080i/50
    1080p/29.97 ————–1080i/59.94
    1080p/30 —————— 1080i/60

    It seems to..

but actually I’m trying to capture in 1080i/50 and FCP just crash…
everything works fine at the rest of configurations..

my config is DVCPROHD deck conected via HD-SDI to a Kona-2 using the breakout box.

there is a weird thing on the the capture preset provided by AJA since the codec selected is 1080/60.

    tomorrow I will test more…
