I am not sure if I am allowed to copy info from the Barefeats website, but this is relatively new, great info that I did not know, and you SATA drive users will find this interesting. http://www.barefeats.com is a fantastic website.

July 25th, 2005 — HighPoint RocketRAID 2220 SATA II host adapter is not really big news speedwise. That’s because it does not support port multiplication. No matter what connectors, cables, or drive boxes you use, it won’t go any faster than SATA I. In other words, all current Mac compatible host adapters are limited to one drive per port. And since the drives top out at 65MB/s, you are NOT going to experience the 300MB/s bandwidth of each SATA II channel.
To to take advantage of that bandwidth, you need a host adapter that supports more than one drive per port (ie port multiplication). My dream SATA II host adapter would support 4 drives per channel/port. Such an adapter with four ports will easily handle a 16 drive RAID 0 set producing 1 gigabyte per second transfer rates. That’s like having a huge RAM disk!
