I posted this on the Final Cut Pro forum because I thought it was an FCP problem. But I got no responses, so now I’m trying here.

This is the situation: shot film with Varicam at 25p. Edited originally in SD PAL. Now recapturing with new Kona 2 in HD uncompressed, 25p. Everything seems fine. Only problem is this: in FCP each clip plays too fast for about a second and then plays smoothly. It looks like a speed ramp. When I play the clips in Quick Time they are completely OK. So the capture is fine, only FCP does something strange with it. WHat’s happening?? Tanks in advance

Was is captured via firewire or uncompressed. I am not sure but this sounds like an rp-188 TC problem. it sounds like FCP is seeing the Varicam footage as speed footage instead of regular varicam footage. the footage flags are in the RP-188 TC. so I suspect that there is something being read by FCP from that TC stream. Try turning that TC off in the KONA control panel and recapturing a few clips from the deck.

Hi David, Strange thing is: the problem was gone when I had all sorts of settings wrong and my monitoring was sort of screwed up. But since I got my settings right again, the problem is back. I’m beginning to believe that it is a Kona problem, because the sound is doing OK in play back. In the Kona 2 Control Panel there is no setting for 720p and 25fps. Could it be that the frame buffer starts at 59,94 and then sort of slows down when there is a lack of input in terms of frames per second?? Or am I talking bullshit here?

Solved the problem; I think. It’s in the video play back settings. Should be 720p 25fps DVCPRO HD 8 bit. Stupidly enough I overlooked this setting

Why don’t you create an easy setup now and then revert back to this when you have any further problems?

I did. The whole thing still doesn’t work a 100% like it should. I can’t really get my finger behind it, but I get the feeling that the settings that are available on the Kona Control Panel are not completely fit for a PAL environment. Tomorrow we will take another look at it
