OS X Mountain Lion 10.8 and Cache-A
Oi.
Anyway, thanks for the support notes with an alternate on how to get this to work.
I wish it was not such a pain.It was a pain in 10.7, and it’s a pain in 10.8

go to https://www.cache-a.com. Click on the support page. You will see the support comments on how to get the Cache-A RedHat Linux box to connect to an OS X 10.7 device. I was foolishly hoping that there would be a better solution with OS X 10.8, but alas, it appears not.
As time goes on, and less and less clients have OS X 10.6.8 (or earlier) which just instantly connect, this means that I will have to go thru this painful process every time I install a Cache-A. This is no big deal when it’s on your bench, or you are at the client location, but when you have to do the installation via
internet remote control – it’s a real pain in the butt.Apple is not making it easy.

Netatalk has been AFP3.3/Lion-friendly since v2.2 back in January, v2.2.3 came out in May, and v3.0 just released in July. I’ve been using it successfully since 2.2.1 with Lion and now Mountain Lion on my FreeBSD ZFS NAS, so it does work. Hopefully Cache-A is working on updating their build to a newer version of Netatalk soon (I assume that is what is handling AFP services for Cache-A under the covers).

Hmmm, BRU PE and BRU Server are compatible with 10.7 and 10.8 out of the box. No fancy manual configuration required…

I wanted to take the opportunity to advise everyone that Cache-A version 3.0 software fixes this problem.
As Andrew pointed out, we needed a newer version of netatalk and now that v3.0 is based on CentOS 6.2, the newer netatalk is included… along with a whole bunch of performance improvements!
BTW, Bru never had this problem because it runs under the MacOS – we run under Linux and have always played nice with Windows and Linux as well as the MacOS providing a true cross-platform solution.

Just wanted to clarify … BRU (it’s an acronym, not a word) also plays nice with Linux, Windows, Solaris, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, IRIX, A/IX, HP-UX, and a dozen or so antique (but still used) and embedded Unixes. And, our tapes are compatible across all of them with any compatible hardware. So you can’t get more cross-platform than that.
