    Mark,

    This will sound like marketing BS, but it’s not.
    External drive/box mfg test more drives than you know, extensively.
    Firmware is then added per the product (in some cases)

    That being said, you’re best not to VOID any potential warranty, etc.
    by only using drives the manufacturer approves.

    Ask Promise?

    Cheers Jon – Promise predictably advised only using drives they tested – there are 4tb ones. I just was hoping to max out the r4 with 5tb or 6tb. Also the tested one available on Amazon is more expensive. But am playing safe with a tested Toshiba 4tb x4.
