Transparent layer with write-on effect
Hi dear community,
I’m a super-newbie in AE, and I would like to create a timeline-video of such for my wife (celebrating 1st anniversary).
For that – I would like to make a video showing a blue line animated that goes through ‘stops’ in my life (with pictures) and a parallel red line for her showing ‘stops’ in her life.
I saw a tutorial that shows how to animate quite easily such a line using the ‘write-on’ effect.
However, I would like the layer that contains this effect to be transparent, as I would like the pictures with particles effect to be under it (and the lines on the layer on top of it).
So far I’ve only found a way to add this write-on effect to a ‘Solid’ layer (that either contains some fill or an image).
But couldn’t figure out how to have a dedicated layer with these write-on effects that is transparent.
I’m sure this is something pretty basic and stupid to ask …
Any suggestions? -

In the effect’s settings, at the bottom is an option for ‘paint style’. Set that to ‘on transparent’.

I will definitely try that.
Do I do that on both write-on effects that are on the layer?
(one blue write-on effect and one red write-on effect).So far I’ve managed to find a way to get the layer to be transparent,
by putting both ‘write-on’ effects on a solid,
that had a mask with the ‘Inverted’ ticked to ‘true’ on it.
Not sure how that helped, but it caused the entire solid to be
transparent, and the blue & red lines on it to be opaque.
So that’s what I wanted, but not sure how I got to it … 🙂 -
the first instance of write-on would be set to ‘on transparent’, the second would be set to ‘on original’ (or however they phrased the default value)… that may seem a little counter-intuitive, but after the first effect, that becomes the new ‘original’.
