What’s faster – RAID 0 on SATA2, or single drive on SATA3?
I have a GA-Z77X-D3H mobo, which has 2x SATA3 & 4x SATA2 ports which use the Intel Z77 chip, plus 2x SATA3 ports using the Marvell 88SE9172 chip.
I have my SSD on SATA3-0, which only leaves one SATA3 port on the Intel chipset. The Marvell chipset offers 2x SATA3 ports, but I’ve read that it’s not wise to RAID drives onto this one.
My remaining options appear to be:
1. Use a 2TB WD Black drive on the open SATA3-1 port, or
2. Raid-0 two 1TB drives onto the SATA2 ports, or
3. Screw what they say and RAID-0 the two 1TB drives onto the Marvell SATA3 connections.What do you think would give me the best performance?

RAID0 on SATA2, with spinning drives: about the same transfer rates (140MB/s), faster response.
With SSDs, it’s another story.

Thank you for your response. In regards for video editing, which seeks information off the drives almost constantly, it seems I would benefit from the “faster response” of a RAID0? Im actually now looking at taking 4x 1tb 7200 drives and RAID10 them into a single 2tb setup.

In video editing, transfer rates are usually the first priority, but faster response definitely helps. RAID10 is a nice setup.
