Mobile Shared Storage Options
Hey Everyone,
I’m working on a project that will require editing on the road. We’ll be using Premiere and there will be at least two people working with the same footage at the same time (Editor and Assistant Editor). Ideally, I’d like to have a set up that would allow everyone to access the same footage at the same time. I have not decided whether to go all laptops or a tower and a laptop. Just wondering if anyone had any advice for what setup would work or if anyone has experience with this sort of thing. A few ideas that I was tossing around:
1. A Drobo 5N connected to a switch and two computers (possible gigabit bottlenecking)
2. Using one Edit machine to Share an external Drobo 5D (possibly too processor intensive for Edit machine)Any help would be appreciated!

you will find portable solutions that will actually work from Maxx
Digital, Small Tree, ProMax and EditShare. All of these solutions will start around $8000.Your Drobo 5D is about $1500. So what can you get for $1500 that will let you do shared storage between 2 or more computers, and actually play back HD video from 2 or more computers at the same time – NOTHING. Not from Drobo, not from QNAP, not from Synology, not from Netgear. While Drobo makes nothing that will work for you, QNAP, Synology, and Netgear ALL have solutions that will work, and all of their solutions start at $8000 as well. “But I just saw a QNAP on Newegg for $2200 – won’t that one work?” –

otherwise you need at least a mac mini server, san network, a SAS Raid (minimum) plus FC/SAS to thunderbolt connection with each Mac book attached to your data storage server.
I would do it this way:
One Raid5 main storage for your footage. Second (mirror) storage on another Raid5 device.
Editing people grab the footage from this desktop device (each of them).cheers

what I find frustration about so many of these posts (and it’s getting worse and worse) is that “professional editors” want to spend ZERO on everything, including their shared storage environment.
I am looking right now at the B&H Photo website for the Drobo 5N with 10 TB of storage. It’s $1134. So this editor says to himself (and his staff) – “hey we can do shared storage for $1134. Well – no you can’t.I received a private email from someone in France today, that tried to build a shared storage system for his company, and is using the
Netgear ReadyNAS 312, which is a 2 drive system that costs $619.
I responded, realizing that he would not like to hear what it costs to build an actual working system, so I sent him information on a REAL Netgear ReadyNAS (the 4200) that would actually work, but of course, it was 20 times his budget.So, no matter how rude, and how insulting, and how informative we may be on this forum, the next post will be “hey, I can build a complete shared storage system for under 700 bucks”. Well, no you can’t. And this is no different from the guy that will soon say “I am trying to edit RED 4K dpx files on my Mac Book Air, and it keeps crashing”. Now, do you just shoot people like this, or ignore them ?

Every minute, a new such person is born. They can quickly calculate that the BOM on a Linux box capable of 4-6 80MB/s streams on 8-16 spindles could be as low as $3K diskless. They will hit the forums, find people who actually tried it and maybe even succeeded, and then they will come to you expecting a solution at the same price point – but not $10K. I don’t know what to do with them – If you figure it out, let me know… 🙂

You really need a dedicated shared storage and project environment to make your job work efficiently in the manner you describe with at least two clients. Project sharing and media sharing at a sustained and manageable rate is not trivial and hence why these systems cost considerably more than the Drobo.
May I draw your attention to the following post https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/305/260 where an EditShare system called a Field 2 is described which would fulfill your requirements. Not only does it support shared storage of media, but also project sharing for Premiere Pro as well as media management.

It’s all nice tries,
in the end it is just a nice idea to get shared storage to no budget conditions.
It belongs to the myth of fairy tails, grandma told us before we got to bed.
End of line: Either you spend some bucks for shared storage, if not there is no shared storage.cheers
