Hard disks for the impoverished
Hi, guys.
Most of you will read this and think, “What is this guy doing??”‘ but hang in there…
I runs small video production company, with two full-time editors, both using Final Cut 7 on iMacs. We work at the low end of the SME spectrum, which is a massive market but one based on volume, not individual sales, hence cash flow for major hardware is out of the question.
At present, we use USB drives to edit from and store our data (I know; but they’re super cheap, and we don’t need massive speed). So each project lives on a master drive, and gets backed up to the backup drive at th beginning after acquisition, and then at the end of the job (if it’s a quick turnaround). But if both editors want to work on two different projects on the same drive, we have to do lots of copying over of footage, which (courtesy of the USB) takes forever.
Almost all of our work is ProRes files generated from Canon 5d originals, and we work mainly on short videos of maximum three minutes.
And yes, I am aware that we are in the Dark Ages when it comes to data storage. But I just can’t see what the next step is, if we don’t want to drop a million billion dollars on fibre channel.
Can anyone suggest our next move?
Thanks, folks of the Cow!
Si.
