Other vendors that I know little about –
    Isilon
    San Solutions
there are several other European vendors that have been mentioned on this forum, that do not have much press in the US. This does not mean that they are not good – they just don’t have a lot of press.

at this moment G-Technology does not make a shared storage solution.
at this moment, Lacie does not make a shared storage solution.

OK – what is your next question ?

    ok
this is for shared archival storage (commercial production company’s entire library – 15 years x 20 directors, many thousands of commercials + room for more)
    so raid 1 (24TB x 2)?
10 gig or 1 gig ethernet for pro res hq 1080?
    maxx or small tree?

    Hi Bob,

Having worked with San Solutions at the last Broadcast facility I worked at, I can give them a big thumbs up. If you need mission critical (Ie ready to air), zero down time and bulletproof, they are the guys, seriously if they see problems a guy is at your door in 24 hours or less it it cannot be fixed via VPN/remote access. Not inexpensive (so probably not for this forum) but the best I have worked with.

Harry Aine the president developed what is now Stornext. And I have had great service from Drew and Bill on the design and support side.

there are no bad companies in the list I have provided for you above.
It is your job to call these companies, ask them questions, ask for references, and see which one suits you best.

[Paul Provost] “this is for shared archival storage (commercial production company’s entire library – 15 years x 20 directors, many thousands of commercials + room for more)”

RAID/SAN is not ideal archival storage, LTO is. If you all need to edit from the same footage at the same time, get a SAN. If you only need to archive and let everyone get access to the archive via the network, look at solutions from Cache-A or Storage DNA.

    Best,
    Andy

Thanks for the vote of confidence Bob! Along with fibre we also do 10GbE and 1GbE universally writable volumes on OSX, Win, Linux (very soon!) through our Shared File System. We’re the only turn-key solution that does that. Check out our Youtube page (youtube.com/user/FacilisTechnology) for some pictures and words that explain a lot about what we do.

    Happy Holidays!

You forgot to mention that FlavourSys Strawberry does this too. We come with support for SAN file systems such as StorNext, HyperFS and XSAN along with multi application support for Avid, FCP, Premiere and more .We do 1GB and 10Gbit ethernet as well – even in mixed environments. Each Strawberry Client provides a google style instant search for projects, meta data, media files and avid bin content. We work on the project (not volume) level and have a build in user and team management.

Have a look at this page and watch our video:

    Kind Regards – Marco

OK, I may be opening a can of worms here, but I really want to know what the advantages are of some providers that Bob listed earlier, specifically over some other solutions that I have been using and researching.

We have a MacPro and an iMac with the occasional MacBook Pro thrown into the mix. We primarily work in ProRes422 with FCP7 and AE 5.5. We have a Thecus N7700PRO hanging off of our switch as our primary media server. Its populated with 7-3TB Hitachi Deskstars. We’ve had the Thecus online for about six months and it has worked perfectly. It gives us 107-120mbps on our 1gig net, which is more than enough throughput for us and similar to what I see advertised by Smalltree and Promax

We are looking to expand and I have been looking at the Qnap TS-EC1279U-RP. It’s $4,679 from B&H.
    https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/826850-REG/Qnap_TS_EC1279U_RP_US_TS_EC1279U_RP_12_Bay_IP_SAN_NAS.html

Populated with the new 3TB Ultrastars at $369/per:
    https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/772033-REG/Hitachi_0F12456_3_TB_3_5_Ultrastar.html

And I have a 36TB media server for under $10K, with a spare drive. A similar setup from Promax, at 32TB nonetheless, is just about $15K. Smalltree is even more.

Can anyone tell me a downside to the Qnap or Thecus servers or explain why I should pay 50-200% more from these other providers? Yes, I’m guessing that they offer support, but is it really worth the additional $$?

    Thanks,

    Andrew
