SAN, nothing but problems…
We bought a SAN Not specifically designed for Video Editing but was supposed to be fast enough to edit video. We have had nothing but problems. That was 18months ago and it’s still not usable. (4 users, 8 workstations. Tests were conducted with 4 workstations.)
We Edit off of Windows XP SP2 workstations using Edius 4.61Broadcast and the accompanying Grass valley NX Cards.
Each Workstation has Sanbolic’s Melio File System installed on them instead of using MetaLan. The SAN volumes are formated with Melio. (Melio negates the need for a seperate PC to play the role of server.)
Each station has a 2 NICs 1 GigE w/ Private IP directly to Foundry Switch.
The foundry switch has a 10GB up-link directly to the SAN.
We are currently only editing DV. We’re not sure if the SAN vendor and Melio are at odds or what. but no one can edit well at all. our NLE often locks up indefinitely, and we have issues where we cannot delete directories and are told continusly that the SAN recycle bin is corrupt. the SAN is setup for RAID 5 and our workstations use the Microsoft iSCSI client.

My thoughts is that if you don’t have someone qualified to help you, you will fail. When you purchased Melio, didn’t a dealer sell this to you ? I don’t care if you buy MetaLAN, EditShare, Apace, Terrablock, Lairdshare, etc. If there is not someone there to help you (like a dealer, or contractor that does networking), you are screwed. None of these systems “just plug in”. What happened to your dealer. If you got MetaLAN – it just doesn’t “work”.
You DO NOT need 10G Ethernet to do DV editing. This works over standard Gig ethernet. I don’t understand why Sanbolic can’t recommend someone to come in (for a fee) to help you.

Thanks for your reply Bob, Your correct about being hosed. The distributor we bought the SAN is the same guy we bought Melio through. He only serves as the middle man with no technical help. He does not even know video. We have 3yrs of support but apparently what we thought was making sure “it all works” start to finish in our environment is not included. Currently SAN vendor is gonna update their internal SAN OS trying to fix some compatibility with Melio. but they won’t even let Melio help him test yet. Finally the GrassValley/Canopus folks won’t say they are iSCSI compatible but on they phone they say Edius does not care as long as it sees the drive and the connection is fast enough for your project but that does not keep the SAN vendor from trying to place blame elsewhere.
