  • Question re erasing Caldigit HDElement for re-sale…

Posted by Shane O’brien on June 5, 2013 at 8:55 pm

I am selling a 4TB CalDigit HDElement and I have what may seem like a silly question about securely erasing the contents of the drives.

I have the unit set up as RAID 5 and have it connected to a MP running OS 10.8. I gather the Caldigit RAID Tool does not work or is no longer required with Mountain Lion.

I securely erased the 3TB volume using Disk Utility (as if it were any other drive). However, I am wondering what if anything else I need to do to ensure the contents are erased before selling it?

    Many thanks!

How secure do you need this (erasure) to be? Expert hacker level or random uninitiated user level?

For the 1st, you’d want to fully rewrite the drives (with zeros or random data) – individually or in RAID0, 2nd – what you did is enough.
