  What shutter angle for 29.97 Ntsc

  I know that 180 is a good shutter angle for filming at 24 frames and gives a nice movie feel.

  What if you are filming at 29.97? would you need to change the sutter angle to get the same nice movie feel? And if so, to what shutter angle should it be changed…

  Listed below are BMCC shutter angle and shutter speed equivalents.

  Shutter settings and motion blur are an aesthetic choice. A relatively low shutter speed is (high shutter angle) results in more blur (smeared motion). A relatively high shutter speed is (low shutter angle) results in less blur (staccato motion). A 180 degree shutter angle is considered “normal”, but you decide what’s most appropriate for a particular scene or project.

  Normal shutter angle of 180 degrees are shown below in bold.

  So, for example, with 30p and 29.97p, a shutter speed of approx. 1/60th second is used to produce “normal” motion blur.

  Note: The BMPCC pocket cam has a firmware issue that may cause the 180 degree shutter angle setting to produce smeary results. Users report the 172.8 degree shutter angle setting produces good-looking results, very similar to normal 180 degree shutter angle. Hopefully this issue will be addressed in a future firmware.

  360 = 1/25th sec.
  324 = 1/27.77

  Thank you, the article is very interesting.

  What about 23.98 fps…. Is it better to film at 23,98 (instead of 24fps) if you plan to convert to 29.97 for NTSC TV?
