Green screen turns black
I have some greenscreen footage I downloaded from Ribbit Films. When I import the footage into AE, it automatically turns the green into black. So then when I color key, should I key the black?
BTW, are there any good primers or basic tutorials out there for keying in AE? I just need the basics, nothing advanced.

Check to see if it’s turning black or if it’s automatically being keyed out, and that whawt you are seeing is you rempty Black AE background. Either change the BG color, or put a layer behind it ands ee if you can see it.
If that’s what’s happening – try this:
Make sure that when you import it you tell it that it is not premultiplied with color (AE may automatically be pullng out the green) – choose “Ignore” for the alpha option.
You can also do this by selecting the footage you’ve already imported, and right clicking on it, and choosing Interperate footage from the popup. This brings up the import footage dialog where you can make the same choice.

The footage is turning black. When I put a red solid behind it, nothing.
However, here’s where it gets wierd. When I right click on the movie clip in the Project window and go to Interpret Footage>Main, the Alpha settings portion of the window is grayed out. I cannot select “Ignore”, or anything for that matter (and nothing appears to be selected by default).
What gives? (The clip is a .mov file…I wonder if it has anything to do with the QT7).

no idea. There could be a problem with the footage,l or it could be QT 7 – lord knows there are enough issues with QT 7.
But here’s a solution – Have you tried importing the same footage into another program and then exporting it in a nother format (or even as Quicktime) for AE from there? maybe that will solve the prob. AE will dowierd things when it has trouble with acodec. You never know…
