  DNX 80 changes aspect ratio and can’t play on VLC??

  I transcoded some 4K XAVC footage I shot into DNxHD MXF DNX 80 preset, yet the footage that comes out of it could not be played on VLC?? When I opened it up in resolve the resolution has changed to 1440x1080p for some reason despite that during the encoding the clearly says the output is 1920x1080p. What might be the problem here? :S

  I tried again with DNX 120 and it was fine. Correct aspect ratio and can play on VLC.

  It doesn’t make any sense. Help!

  That’s the nature of DNxHD 80. It’s a subsampled codec which reduces resolution to 1440×1080. If you’re looking for space savings then stick with DNxHD 100 or even 36 (if you’re doing a Proxy-based workflow).

  Ah thanks. Haven’t tested it myself, but any consensus on best codec to transcode XAVC to for easy grading on Resolve on a PC? Currently I’ve been shooting XAVC 4K and transcoding to DNxHD 120. Would higher bitrate say DNX 185 or even higher have much of a difference if the original was XAVC 100mbps only?

  If you’re on a PC DNxHD is probably you’re best choice. If you need resolutions beyond HD look at DNxHR codec, also from Avid. HR handles 4K resolutions, whereas HD only does HD resolutions (as the name implies).
