  • Data Rate versus Bit Rate

I look around and couldn’t find anything on this. Also didn’t see a “compressor 4” category so posted in fcpx.

I’m exporting a Prores 4444 3840 x 1634 short film. The master file is 145.6 GB and the custom made H.264 MP4 at 2048 x 871 is only 3.29 GB. I thought the 3.29 seemed smaller than expected. A friend asked what the bitrate was and I noticed there’s an option for changing the bitrate for DVD exports but not for MP4.

I did see a “Data Rate” option that ranges from 64 – 30,000. Does the data rate act as the bitrate for digital files like MP4s? Should I raise that number as if it were the bitrate? if so, what’s a recommend number?

Thanks so much for any advice!

Data rate, bit rate, same thing isn’t it? For 4k I’d peg that at 30 because 1080p is recommended around 15.

    Thanks, Bret!

So for data rate numbers would that mean I would set it at 30,000? (out of the 64-30,000) range.

    I create 4K for upload at 30,000 and 1080p at 15,000.
