View playback on an external monitor or display
Hello, I have set up dual monitors (iMac and HP Pavillion) for the film I am currently editing at home. I want to view the playback on an external monitor while having a smaller view of the timeline I am editing. When I read up how to do this, Apple said I would require an AV Output Device. I wanted to ask which AV Output Devices are the cheapest and best suited for Macs. Many thanks.

Connect the display that you want as fullscreen video via HDMI. In FCPX preferences, under Playback, set the AV Output to the desired monitor from the pulldown. Then under the top menu Window selection, enable AV Output. You should see fullscreen video on one display and the full FCPX UI on the other.

PS: To answer your original question, you will need a real video display (not computer monitor) and a video i/o device in order to get color accurate images. However, the methods I described above will look perfectly fine for editing, assuming that the monitor set-up is correct.
But, to get video to a monitor, you need a Thunderbolt to SDI/HDMI i/o device. Here are the two cheapest.
