Unable to “Insert Edit” in this particular Project
Posted by Joe Taylor on October 27, 2017 at 6:25 pmHello. Having a problem with a new project where I am unable to “Insert Edit” clips into the timeline. Even the “Insert” is not highlighted in the “Edit” dropdown menu. I’m used to dragging the clip to the timeline and easily dropping it the desired part of the timeline. Any ideas what is wrong here? Using 10.3.4.
Many thanks.

October 27, 2017 at 6:41 pmSo when you have the project timeline active (command-2), you can’t use the W key to insert a clip? Might want to restart X and trash prefs on launch (hold option-command keys down while launching FCPX).

October 27, 2017 at 7:09 pmHello Scott,
Tried your advice with no luck yet. One thing that is different from this timeline than the others is that there are blue dots that correspond with the head and tail of every clip that are situated just above the audio track.
Have only been using FCPX for only a few months and sometimes it drives me nuts.

October 28, 2017 at 2:41 pmI searched online for possible remedy’s or hours last night with no luck. If you can guys can glean anything from the screenshot I posted I’d love to hear from you. Otherwise I’m just going to abandoned this version and start all over with a version 2.0. Kelly don’t have time for that.
Many thanks!!

October 28, 2017 at 9:46 pmAre you happy to share an FCPXML of the library?
I obviously won’t have the media but at least I can have a look to see if I can find anything amiss.

October 29, 2017 at 12:35 amHello Matt, would be happy too. Let relook into how that’s done in case something like this comes up again… and it will.
I went ahead and started the project over from scratch.

October 29, 2017 at 12:43 amWas it any project in the library you had difficulty with or just one project in the library.
If you want to, export a XML of the ‘bad library’ by selecting File > Export XML and upload it to here.

October 30, 2017 at 4:03 amIt was just a project with a single storyline. I went back and did complete rebuild of the project. It all worked out in the end. Thank you.

November 19, 2017 at 1:34 pmDid you check if your cursor was in ‘position’ mode instead of ‘select’?
Yeah, you solved the problem by rebuilding the project, but just in case, next time if it happens, you could double-check it.
I had the same problem and it was that simple problem, my arrow was in ‘position’ mode. It could be confusing as they look similar and do everything else same except for inserting clips.
