  • FCP X no longer plays WMVs files (even with Flip4mac Player Pro)?

Posted by Xavier Paredes on April 6, 2016 at 5:21 pm

In my old MacBook Pro I used to be able to play WMV encoded files within FCP 7 if I had Flip4Mac installed.

On my new MacPro (cylinder) I can no longer play WMV encoded inside FCP X despite the fact that I just upgraded to Flip4Mac Player Pro.

Before upgrading I did call Telestream and they told me I would be able to do this if I upgraded to Flip4Mac Player Pro.

Did the gentleman over at Telestream give me wrong info or has anyone indeed been able to play MOVs with WMV codec inside FCP X?

NOTE: by “MOVs with WMV codec” I mean the video files have the QT icon and “mov” extension and when I get info, QuickTime says:

Windows Media Audio 9 Standard*, Mono, 44.100 kHz
    Windows Media Video 9 Standard, 640 × 480, Millions

    Thanks!

    Xavier

    Flip4Mac 3.3.7.3 Studio Pro HD
    OSX 10.11.4
    FCPX 10.2.3

WMV can’t be imported into FCPX
WMV wrapped as MOV imports but there is no audio.

Quicktime 7 reports the codec I tested as Video VC-1, Audio Windows Media Audio 9 Standard
Quicktime X transcodes the WMV to H.264 before playing

Apple doesn’t license the WMV codec from Microsoft.

Telestream does (as I understand it)

So the Telestream products including Episode and Flip4Mac can read a WMV file and transcode them into something you Mac can work with.

It’s all about Intellectual Property and use rights in the end.

    And so it goes.
