I have created a movie on FCX, and have exported it. After exporting it the actual project was lost. Is there some way that I can find it, or is there a way that final project can be broken back into actual clips?

Not sure what you mean but if the Project/Library is gone- nothing short of a Christmas miracle is going to restore it. Have you looked into your Backups folder?

My guess is that it went into the Trash ….

check there and move it out.

Otherwise it is very lost and the App called Data Rescue MAY be able to recover it.

Also – was this on an external drive or the internal drive?

If it was the internal drive – when you download and install Data Rescue, you will over right
some of your FCP X library that you want to recover.

Many times I have seen people start with a clip, and choose to “open in timeline”.

This is the improper way to work, but if you can find that clip that you started with in the browser, right click and choose “open in timeline” you may find your edit.

Then, select all, copy, make a new Project, and paste the edit into a proper Project.
