I have a RAID 5 setup. The enclosure has 4 drives. I’m using all 4. Can I remove one drive and replace with a different internal hard drive?
I’m using an OWC Thunderbay 4. It has room for 4 drives, and I’m using all 4 as a RAID 5 for a big project I’m working on.
I need some drives for other projects, and I want to buy some internal drives and occasionally use them inside the Thunderbay. Can I switch out one drive, replace it with another, then use the Thunderbay as a RAID 0 so I can simply use it for the other work? Or should I buy a separate internal docking station and not disturb the RAID 5?

Don’t mess with the RAID 5 array. Get yourself another external that can take a bare drive; like this: https://www.cru-inc.com/products/rtx/rtx110-3q/

A RAID 5 takes an awful long time to format and set up (read: overnight, and sometimes days!). It’s not something to be swapping drives out of. I agree with Jason, buy a separate enclosure that you configure as JBOD for swapping drives.

“I have one and use it most every day. Works great.
In our other bay, which has a 2010 MP tower, I use a NewerTech Voyager Q connected to a USB3 card. Also works well.

I use the NewerTech Voyager Q connected to a USB3 card on my 2010 Mac Pro and it works great for me as well.
