  Curious Composition size

  Hi Gang –

  Be gentle – first poster in here. But take this:

  I am importing a HDV clip that has the following settings into AE CS5:

  1440×1080 (1.33), Separating (Upper)
  29.97 fps
  HDV 1080i60

  … and when I am dragging it over the Make New Composition” icon, the composition looks more like a 4:3 ratio and I have no way of changing that for the clip to look normal unless I set the composition to 1920×1440 (using Square pixels).

  Also by default I cannot create a new composition using the 1440 x 1080 size (an square pixels) – the “Lock Aspect Ratio” always shows 4:3 (1.33)…

  Am I doing something wrong??

  The HDV footage has a pixel aspect ratio of 1.33. It is not square pixel. You either want to use the HDV 1080 composition preset and make sure that you view with pixel aspect ratio correction turned on (it’s a composition viewer switch), or you want to put the clip in a 1920×1080 square pixel comp.

  I’d go with setting up a comp that is 1920×1080 pixels, with a Square (1.0) pixel aspect ratio. When you drag in your 1440×1080 footage, press command+opt+f (ctrl+alt+f) to make it fit to the composition.

  In my opinion, it’s a good rule of thumb to work in square pixels — things are less likely to get messed up….

  Thanks for your responses – Placing the clip in a 1920×1080 square pixel comp solved the issue (using the square pixel setting).

  Also I choose that same setting to render the final clip – to be used later in FCP –
