  • Multicam audio….?

Posted by Tom Sefton on July 16, 2015 at 7:58 am

    Hi Guys

Having an odd issue after updating to 10.2.1

I’m using Multicam to sync some work, so we have left and right streams as camera angles A and B, a closeup camera as C and an audio mix down as angle Z.

When they are synced, I open the multicam clip, but for some reason I can’t hear any audio aside from angle A. If I drop the multicam clip into another project, I can force audio output to hear the Z angle, but whilst working on the multicam clip, I can’t hear anything aside from scratch audio on Camera angle A….

    Does anyone have any tips?

    Cheers!

When the multiclip is loaded as a timeline, you can monitor the audio of as many angles as you want:

Is your Z angle audio monitoring activated?

    Hi jerome

Yes it’s activated and all others are off. No difference – I can’t hear the z angle. I can hear A, but only B, C or Z when looking at the clip inside another project and switching audio there

Hmm… And you’re saying this happens when playing the multiclip from within the timeline, not from the browser?

If it’s from the browser, you can enable specific audio tracks from the Inspector:

If it’s from within the timeline, I’m stumped.

…Actually, is it possible that your external audio is incorrectly set to something like 5.1 (as opposed to 6 mono channels) which in turn lead the multiclip audio to be set to 5.1 and you’re not properly hearing a mixdown of all the channels? You may want to enable your audio meters to see if that can help you make sense of the issue.

    This is getting weird.

When I work with the Multicam Clip open, the waveform for Z is clearly visible and peaking at around -5db. Nothing comes from my external sound card. I’ve tried setting the external card to mono, stereo and 5.1 and it makes no difference.

The only time I can hear the audio is when I place the multicam clip inside a new project and select the audio from the inspector tab. Then it plays fine, but for working in the multicam viewer, I have no audio other than the A angle. The frustrating thing is that in Premiere, you can manually adjust in the program how your audio tracks are routed – nothing for me to adjust within FCPX.

Tom, this sounds related to this:

It’s a quick fix and causes no harm. In my case, the setting appeared to be correct already, but going through the steps to set it, fixed my monitoring issue.
