MXF in FCPX: Optimized media
Hi!
I’m in need of assistance: I wonder why my imported MXF files are not getting transcoded into Apple Pro res 422 in FCPX. They stay as ”original media” and I need my MXF files as independent clips from FCPX. I know they are supposed to be in the package from the library in a folder named ”optimized media” but it’s not. Can you guys help me? Thank you!

I don’t do much with MXF but what you’re describing sounds about right. Since the Pro Video Formats 2.0 update earlier this year FCPX considers MXF a native format and so won’t transcode the clips.
If you select clips in the browser and don’t get an option to manually transcode them to optimised media then that’s what’s happening and you’ll have to do your transcoding to ProRes before you import the footage into FCPX.

What camera are the MXF files from?

50Mbit MPEG2 HD is considered optimized to FCPX. There is no performance benefit to transcode to ProRes and will inflate the size of the files 1.5 times or so.
