I’m helping a friend out by grading her short film. She cut in FCP X 10.0.9 and I am using DaVinci 11.2.1 Lite. I used xto7 to translate the xml for DaVinci to read.

I’ve gotten the sequence to come into DaVinci; but there are substantial problems. A lot of clips are wildly off on the in and/or out points. Anything with a speed changes is not interpreted correctly. There are entire clips missing.

I have zero experience with FCP X and don’t even know where to start in tackling this issue. My initial thoughts are that her version of FCP X needs to be updated so a more current xml can be generated.

Any thoughts on where to begin would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Why didn’t you just export and XML out of X and import it to R11? I have done this, and while I need to repo text, it was all spot on. R11. You will see FCPXML in the import options for R11.

DaVinci 11 only accepts xml version 1.3 or 1.4. Her version of FCP X can only generate xml version 1.2

Another question. Can a newer version of FCP X open FCP X 10.0.9 projects and export a more current version of xml?

The 10.0.9 Event/Project can be opened and will be updated. So she would need to duplicate and open the events and projects on another machine, if she wants to keep the older version.

Generally you shouldn’t update with unfinished projects, but unless she’s s been using lots of plugins, I would recommend she update (carefully and backing up) anyway. However, 10.1. and now 10.2 use the Library structure which is different than the old 10.0.9 event/project structure. Its easy to understand but does require some adjustment when updating. Yes. If the editor wants to retain fcpx10.09 then take a copy of the project to another machine with 10.1 or higher. Export XML and open in Resolve. Should be in very good shape!

Find a machine with a new copy of FCP X. Take the old FCPXML into the newer copy of FCP X (with or without media). Re-export the sequence XML in version 1.4. Resolve 11 will be happy. I’ve recently gone through this same process and the translated XMLs tended to not work correctly because of the older FCPXML format.

Would there be anyone on the boards here willing to do what Oliver suggested?
