Stills in Fcpx
Hi!
I’ve made a project from my old dv tapes. It’s a 720×576 project, i will add som stills, and the photos are more than 5000. Should I reize before adding? If I do some zooming, ken burns etc, what should the res be for best quality? -

My rule of thumb is to not have images be more that 2x the project resolution. This gives you the ability to zoom in 50% and still have 1:1 resolution while maintaining good quality. If you have images that you won’t be zooming in on I would prepare them at the project size. No NLE is going to resize photos as good as a dedicate photo editor so even though you can drop a large photo on the timeline, it doesn’t mean that you should. Preparing photos at the correct resolution for your project (and making them broadcast safe at the same time) is still the best method for highest still image quality.

Depends on your system specs- experiment and see how it goes. Once you zoom past 100% on a still you will lose some quality.

Ok, sounds good. I know that aperture make previews for sharing. It’s easy to change preferances for previews, and then drag photos to fcpx. Just don’t know if the result will be better if I export in preferable size, and then import pix to fcpx

There’s no best way- if there were it’d be baked into the app. Experiment…

You said “don’t know” as appeased to “didn’t know” which implies that you still don’t have your answer.
Resizing photos to the size of your project will yield as good or better quality than dropping large images into FCP X and having it resize them for you because one way or the other, they are getting resized. If you resize them yourself, you can control the method (bilinear, bicubic, lanczos, etc.) and quality. If you let FCP X resize them you get what it gives you (I’m not sure what method it uses).
The bigger question is will you notice the difference in quality? As Noah said, play around and see for yourself, then use what looks best.
