Black Magic Mini Monitor and Newertek USB 2.0 to DVI on iMac
I’ve not tried this yet but was thinking of adding both of these items to my 2011 iMac which has one Thunderbolt 1.0 port. Wouldn’t this give three displays at once?
1st Display(iMac)Main Desktop – FCPX projects
2nd Display(Newertek USB2.0) – FCP Events
3rd Display (Black Magic – Thunderbolt) – Program Monitor.Would this work? Also does anyone have any experience with the Black magic Mini Monitor. Is it truly just Program out of FCPX or is a it a “desktop” OUT?

The mini monitor, like all bmd, aja, matrox devices for FCP/Avid/Adobe are video out devices which work only with specific programs. They won’t provide you any additional real estate. They are designed to be attached to a video monitor/televison. Not a computer monitor. That’s not to say they won’t power an hdmi computer monitor, but you’ll just get a video feed, not any additional desktop.
It would be incorrect to call your setup a 3 monitor setup. It’s a two monitor setup with a video monitor.
How are you going to attach the newertek monitor? You say usb 2. But how does that work? A second monitor needs to be attached to your thunderbolt port unless there’s some usb product I’ve not heard of. Without 2 thunderbolt ports I’m not sure how you’re attaching an extra monitor and the mini monitor.

Oh I see, the newertek device… does that support mac? Looks like windows only.

The Newertech USB DVI display adapters that OWC sell are Mac compatible…

You have it correct, I want two computer monitors that are essentially for the FCPX interface. One would be the main interface where the projects and windows are and the other computer monitor would be on this device on a USB 2.0 port:

…which is mac compatible. Then in FCPX I would choose to “SHOW EVENTS IN SECOND DISPLAY” which allows me to have a nice large view of all my events and clips.My Thunderbolt port is then available for the MiniMonitor. And yes I would then get a TV or some other Monitor that would accept the HDMI out of the MiniMonitor. And there you have it, two computer monitors for the application and one tv monitor for program out.
Can anyone else chime in here who has used either of these products? Basically I just want to know if this would in theory work. In other words I want to make sure there won’t be some sort of resource conflict.

I think I may have just figured out a problem here. I found this disclaimer on the Macsales Site just under the product description for the Newertek adapter.
Note: This release does not support OpenGL acceleration (3D hardware acceleration) so therefore applications and features that require OpenGL, Quartz Extreme, Quartz Composer and other framework based on OpenGL will not be fully supported. Examples of such features are Keynote Presentations, iPhoto Slideshows and iMovie.
So I’m guessing maybe this newertek product is not the way to go. Perhaps the Matrox Docking Station DS1 HDMI would actually do the trick?

It’s got HDMI out and I would probably try to use that for my second computer monitor for my events and clips. Then it’s got a thunderbolt port which I would connect my Black Magic MiniMonitor to and from there to a TV, that gets me my program out. Does anyone have experience with the Matrox DS1?Nate

The Matrox box only has a thunderbolt input. It’s designed to be at the end of the chain like the Mini Monitor. I suspect your only option to achieve what you want will be an Apple display which will give you a thunderbolt pass-through.
