Seeing the length of a clip
Here’s a simple question:
It seems that sometimes, I’m able to select any clip on my timeline, and Final Cut will show me the length of the selected clip at the very bottom of the screen. (on the grey strip at the bottom of the whole interface). Yet, just as often, the selected clip duration doesn’t show up there when I select a clip– instead, it just shows the entire length of the timeline.
How do I get it to just show me the clip duration?

I use this feature all the time and have never seen what you are explaining if something is selected.
A range has to be selected in order for the selection duration to show up.
If nothing is selected, then nothing shows up.

Something is Off then. Right now, as I’m typing this to you, I have an entire clip selected/ It’s highlighted yellow. And at the bottom of the screen, all it’s showing me is the total duration of my entire film (timeline). Not the selected clip. Yet ten mins from now, while editing, this feature will randomly start working again. There’s gotta be something I’m not doing right here.

If possible, can you show a screengrab?

If you hover over the clip and hit X then you’ll select the clip range per Jeremy’s suggestion. Does that sore the duration?

BTW you’re not crazy. I saw this behavior recently. Reboot fixed it. Clicking on a clip in the timeline does give the duration when the app is functioning correctly.

Yeah, figured it must be a bug. Because it’s very random and follows no pattern.
Another bug I can’t stand, is when you fade to black on a clip, using the Opacity tool. Then you decide to undo it, and raise the Opacity back up to 100%, but ONE frame remains black, no matter what you do. The only way I’ve found to fix it, is to cut that frame out by lifting it, then go into ‘P’ mode and drag a frame over to where it was. Weird.

Wow that is a bug. I was able to easily recreate. Once I figured out what the opacity tool was. I’ve never used it. It’s buried a bit deep. Why not simply use a cross dissolve?
I was able to fix it by slicing off that frame, then simply extending the resulting video one frame. No P tool. Cmd+B, then click on the end and press >.

I’m actually not running into this bug b/c I want to create a cross dissolve. Rather, I want the scene to fade to total black. Then have the next scene start by fading up from that black. And as far as I know, the easiest way to do and have control over that, is to click Control V on the clip, bring up the Video options, and fade out the opacity.

A dissolve to nothing is a fade to black. You could also use a fade to color effect between 2 clips. The color being black of course.
